Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Jason Backlund has a diverse and extensive background in the martial arts, and he utilizes that experience to create classes that increase a student’s stamina, strength, and flexibility while developing technique. The focus is on self defense, but the ultimate goal is always self improvement.

With more than 30 years of experience, Jason has earned a master’s license (Menkyo Kaiden) in Yamagata Ryu Bujutsu, a Japanese style of sword and empty-hand fighting, and holds dan ranks in Judo and Aikido. He is also an instructor of Matsubara Ke Jujutsu. Starting in 2010, Jason began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under black belt Bobby Thompson. In 2013, he joined the Palhares Jiu-Jitsu Association and is currently a brown belt under 8th degree Master Luiz Palhares.

Jason has been a professional kickboxer and has worked in VIP security. He has been a trainer for both amateur and professional mixed martial artists, and has taught law enforcement and military personnel. His classes, while honoring tradition, are geared toward the application of self-defense tactics in the modern world.

Each class begins with a warm up, followed by a lesson that will build a solid base, emphasizing fundamentals while exploring options for technical advancement. The end of each session allows for free practice and sparring.
